Project 3: Audio Storytelling

For the remainder of my story telling I have choose to go with a Disney Pixar inspired movie in a story telling format, which goes by Monsters Inc and is a childhood classic among many kids and adults.

1 Story Telling

First I started on the voice over of the story telling which was broken down into two types: 1. Narrator and 2. Character voice Impersonations for the characters, Ms. Flint, Mr. Waternoose and one of the most popular fictional characters, Sulley. For all of the voice recordings, I have used my Steel Series TUSQ In-Ear Gaming Headset.

1.1 Narrator

For the Narration aspect of the story telling, I kept a calm and soothing voice over for the Listeners to feel immersed in the story.

The audio track for most of the Narration audio contained the DeEsser effect to remove the aggressive tone from "Es" heard throughout the narration, being soothed now.

1.2 Quote

As for the quotes found within the story book with the said characters present within the duration I have compiled the story, There were a total of 4 recordings on the basis of 3 characters and I will be going through each and every one of them, 1 by 1:

For Ms. Flint, since I didn't have a girly voice in nature nor do I know many girls, I decided to use the Pitch Shifter to manipulate my voice higher in Semi-tones with a NA Texas accent for the voice of Ms. Flint.

With regards to Mr. Waternoose's intimidating presence and being the head of Monster, Inc I felt a very deep monstrous voice would well suit him. Hence having some experience in accent impersonation I had manually voice lined his part without any effects but changing the volume of the voice line using keyframes on parts that gave high frequency

As for Sulley, I have done the same as I've done for Mr. Waternoose with more of a manly deeper male voice instead of a monster voice to best represent Sullivan.

2 Sound Effects (SFX)

But the gathered  mp3's that brought forth the immersion are:

Nextly, I put on the sound effects within my story telling  audio to bring forth a sense of realism like the listeners can imagine the scenarios a bit more clearer. To be fair most the sfx was at the beginning of the audio and I couldnt find appropriate timings in the later stages of the story telling.

3 Background Music (BGM)

To full compliment the audio story telling, we will have to add in some sounds effects and the one I went for was the official BGM used in Monsters, Inc the movie hence having a high production value while also presenting to be in tune with the story.

Using two tracks that highly complimented the stories parts: "School" for the first one and "Enter the Heroes" used for the 2nd part of the story both brought a interactive undull experience for the listeners who will be listening the story telling. Both tracks volumes were adjusted accordingly with keyframe to not sound too loud nor sound too low in volume.

4 Visual Video

Finally I had complied the story books parts I will be using with transitions and the exported audios track from adobe audition together via the video editing software DaVinci Resolve to complete the Audio Story telling project.

4 Final Results

The video while exported all together for proposal, I have added the video in adobe audition as well in the needed case of viewing it.

Reflection

Throughout this project, I would say, I still have a lot of understanding to do on how sound designing works and the different aspects of it that can be well tuned as well as being proficient in Adobe Audition but, I have came to understand more and well focused towards this project on storytelling. It has brought forth many of the audio uncertainties I've had when hearing stories (E-books) watching movies (Like Monsters, Inc) and how in sync the audio has to be with the other environments taken into account. Overall for my project, i would say, I enjoyed the process of developing a story but I felt I don't really have the voice for it (Maybe my lecturer might differ?) but was a joyful journey overall and I'm glad to have my story on Monsters, Inc it has brought forth many memories I've had when I was a kid and I also started rewatching the movies haha. Looking through everything, I would say I definitely have the interest and passion towards audio designing as I've posted clips on games during my gaming era and this has given me a push towards the audio aspects for sure which I might use later on in my life If i ever start to make content again. I'm excited and thrilled on my final project I have for this module which is based on gameplay sound design where I would say I excel at? We shall see and I hope to put my 100% towards it.
